Attend Meetings and Conventions
The best way to support your local organization, other than paying member dues, is to attend meetings. You are much more likely to volunteer for other positions if you are a regular attendee. Of course, it's the only way to really get to know other members too. Most groups have a set schedule for their regular meetings, such as the first Tuesday of the month or the second Wednesday of the month, etc. Most groups also have a regular meeting place as well. It can be hard to find a place where the group can meet for free but many groups meet at a restaraunt or bar, a community center, a bookstore, library or municipal building.
If you know someone who may be interested in joining, bring them along so they can get an idea what the group is all about. If you have a family member who is not interested in joining but is supportive of you, bring them along to get to understand you better. Ask the organizer of the meeting if there is anything you could bring along. You could bring some drinks for everyone or the group may need some piece of equipment that you can supply.
Sometimes it is more convienient and efficient for board meeting to take the form of net-meetings. Board members can utilize any of the numerous chat rooms on the web to hold short meetings and discuss the business of the organization.
Besides regular meetings, groups have all kinds of fun activities like picnics, book clubs, community service and more. Get involved in the planning stages and help to organize these extra activities. You may have ideas of your own for an activity in a nearby park or one that incorporates a personal hobby. There may be flyers that need to be posted around town or some other form of advertising you could help with.
