By the word "hero" we mean anyone who has name recognition and is openly non-religious. The purpose is to gain public recognition of the fact that Freethinkers can be ethical, successful, law-abiding citizens who contribute to society in many ways. There are several sites which list famous non-theists.

The Celebrity Atheist List site breaks them down to three categories; The Atheist, The Agnostic and The Ambiguous. Sometimes it's hard to tell exactly where people stand by the comments they've made. About.com has a series of short biographies of some Famous Atheists, Skeptics and Freethinkers

One way to honor those heroes who have passed away is to research whether any of them are buried near your home and then visit the grave to determine if it is being cared for. If not, you may want to adopt the task yourself. Advertise the presence of the grave locally through a letter to the editor or radio talk show and maybe you can get some help. You can search for graves by name or location at findagrave.com, which even allows you to leave a flag or flowers and a note. You may come across a lesser-known Atheist like Ham. Of course, the Atheist superheroes have no gravesites.
