Local Gov’t Taking
Religious Holidays?
It was common at one time for some government offices to close on "Good
Friday" and other religious holidays. Now the official federal holidays include:
New Year's Day
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Washington's Birthday
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
It might also be advisable to watch how certain holidays are celebrated in
government offices such as in the days leading up to the "Christmas"
holiday. There should be allowance for some holiday at the end of December as so
many religions celebrate at this time but it should not be officially termed
"Christmas" by our government.
It is still questionable whether Thanksgiving Day should be recognized by the
federal government. Who is the government expecting us to thank?
In small towns, you may find some information in the local newspaper about occurrences
within public offices. Otherwise, you will need to work there or know someone
who does.
