Public Libraries Books In Print Atheist Alliance

Most public libraries are woefully under-stocked with Freethought materials. That is unfortunate because many more people would read atheist books if they were available at their local library. Some people don't have enough money to buy the atheist books they may be interested in. Peopel who feel they must hide their atheism in their own homes, for whatever reason, would much rather read these items in the library. Some may be curious but not willing to invest their money on a book on Atheism. And if you want to read a book that is long out of print, where else do you go?

If your local public library doesn't already have books by Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, and Hitchens, you should submit requests for them. If you don't have a title in mind when you happen to find yourself at the library, then ask to see their copy of Books in Print by Subject. Check listings under Atheism, Freethought, Agnosticism. Ignore listings under "Atheism, Christian". These are Christian views of Atheism which can be rather insulting. It would be a good idea to find the appropriate librarian and talk to them about their purchasing policies before making your suggestion. That leaves them less room to deviate from policy and discriminate based on the subject matter. Most libraries have a Purchase Suggestion Form for books that you fill out to suggest a particular book. Fill out a request card for Freethought books that you would like your public library to carry. Remember there are also freethought magazines, newsletters, CD's and movies which can suppliment your library's collection. In the case of periodicals, you can have the subscription in your name and have them mailed to the library. That way, you could occasionally change the mailing address to have them sent to another nearby library.

If the library says they cannot purchase the books you suggest, inquire about donating. Ask about the procedure for donating. There may be certain conditions to be met. It may be that the library only accepts new books and not used or only from residents in the local area and not from the next county or State. If you are going to purchase books to donate, check Amazon.com and use the link on the Atheist Alliance website so they will get a piece of the action.

Donate books to public school libraries. Most school librarians wish for more money to enhance the learning environment for their students. Donations of learning materials are always appreciated. Talk with the librarian before you show up at the school with a book or stack of books to donate. The librarian may not be accepting donations at that time or may not need what you have. Choose books appropriate to the age level. There is no reason to donate books to a school library that are not age-appropriate for the reading level at the school. Check the books' physical condition. Books in poor condition, despite the title or subject of the book, are not needed because they either fall apart quickly or receive little to no circulation because students judge the worthiness of the book based solely on its physical condition. Understand if books are not accepted. Be prepared for the donation to be turned away. If the book does not fit the requirements of age-appropriateness, physical condition or if the book does not fit any of the school's needs, the librarian is under no obligation to accept your donation.

P.S. Libraries make a great meeting place for your organization.
