Expose the Scams

Pope Leo X (1513 - 1521)
"How well we know what a profitable superstition this fable of Christ has been for us"
Religions are ripe for scam artists and every once in a while we hear of another scam being uncovered. When televangelists and preachers make claims of miraculous healing or financial blessings, even most believers become skeptical. There have beeen many over the years who have been exposed as being less than genuine. Jim and Tammy Baker come to mind right away. When people like Peter Popoff, Ernest Angley and Benny Hinn deceive religious people out of billions of dollars per year, I couldn't care less. They deserve to lose their money if they abandon their rational faculties.
At the same time there are the psychics, mediums, spiritual advisers and others who lead the general public to believe that the claims of communicating with a spiritual realm are all legitimate. Magicians, psychic spoon benders and the rest have been challenged over the years by folks like the man who has been doing an excellent job at this for years, James Randi. He is a great example of a skeptical inquirer. Listen to "The Amazing Randi" in various interviews.
The people who are real trouble are the ones who claim to have scientifically proven some religious claim which they have not. The recent alleged discovery of the "Jesus box" has been exposed as a hoax. The Shroud of Turin has been disproved, although most beleivers refuse to accept the facts of the scientific findings. The NBC hoax of Noah's Ark was a beautiful example of religious bias in reporting. The entire story was designed as a hoax to discedit one Duane Gish and the Institute for Creation Research of which he was Vice-President.
We can all play a part in this by pointing out the everyday ludicrous religious claims about things like holy water and the power of prayer.
