Challenge Religious
Sentences Imposed by Judges
Treatment at Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12-step programs has been
determined to involve religious services and proselytizing by several
courts. Sentences to attend these meetings amount to violations of the
separation of church and state. Yet some judges continue to hand down such
sentences.
Atheists often refuse to accept such conditions on parole or sentence
reduction. The non-religious have a right to alternatives like Smart Recovery
and Rational Recovery.
It is also inappropriate for an Atheist to be required to perform community service at religious institutions
such as soup kitchens where prayer and religious indoctrination is the norm.
